Speed / Time / Distance

The classic navigation triangle — solve for any one value given the other two.

What do you want to calculate?
Tip: Use decimal hours for time — e.g. 2.5 hours = 2h 30m. For sub-hour legs, 0.25 = 15 min.

The 60 D = S × T formula

The fundamental navigation formula is Distance = Speed × Time. When working in nautical units, speed is in knots (nautical miles per hour), time in hours, and distance in nautical miles. The variants:

  • Speed = Distance ÷ Time (knots)
  • Time = Distance ÷ Speed (hours)
  • Distance = Speed × Time (nm)

For minutes instead of hours, multiply hours by 60. For seconds, multiply by 3600. This calculator handles the conversion automatically — enter time in decimal hours (e.g., 2.5 hours = 2h 30m).
